Janet Beckett, Garden Designer

Based in Ryde on the Isle of Wight, I am a professional garden designer, having qualified at Capel Manor College. Taking an imaginative, yet practical and realistic approach to garden design, I understand how much your outdoor world matters.

When I work with you I will do more than just draw up a plan. I will meet with you, in person, in your garden, so that I can truly understand what it is you want your outdoor space to bring to your life. Whether you are looking for a simple planting plan to revive an existing flower bed, or a completely new design to create the garden of your dreams, I can help you articulate and realise your vision.

Free one hour consultation

I offer a free one hour consultation, in your garden, where you tell me what you’d like to achieve. Together we make a list of your priorities and discuss what type of design you’re after - cottage garden, formal, romantic….maybe open, minimalist modern or more intimate with hidden secret places.

I then prepare a summary of my visit and send you a proposal setting out a schedule of work. If you are happy with my summary, proposal and fees, I will arrange to come back and measure the garden and set about producing some initial drawings for us to discuss and refine further.

This garden is a classic suburban, long narrow space facing north. The client wanted to combine a ‘party garden’ close to the house, with a free range area for the children. It was also important to protect plants from the boisterous family dog and stray footballs. Read more.

Ryde, Isle of Wight

introducing colour and texture

This large, lawned garden on two levels was surrounded by mature holm oaks and high hedges. The owners wanted to introduce colour and texture in the form of low maintenance flower beds and generally create more visual interest. Read more.

Bembridge, Isle of Wight

blurring the boundaries

This garden is bounded by other houses and garages but its corner position affords it generous front and back garden areas surrounded by two metre high wooden fencing. All that fence needed to be disguised to give the impression of endless greenery. Read more.

Ryde, Isle of Wight

RIBA New Build Award-winning house

The owners of this minimalist, modern classic wanted a low maintenance margin of planting to soften and colour the boundaries. All the borders can be seen from the first floor where the main living areas are located. There is a backbone of hard working shrubs and trees giving texture….Read more.
